That last bell rings on the last day of school, and the kids are free from their prison. Not in the literal sense, but that’s certainly how some of them feel. Summer break is a much-needed reprieve from the classes, pencils, and notebooks, but there are potential consequences to ignoring the progress made during the school year. Summer learning loss has a documented effect on children’s math and reading skills, but combating it doesn’t have to ruin vacations or pool days.
What Summer Learning Loss Looks Like
The existence of summer learning loss is confirmed, but the extent of the regression is a point of contention. There’s conflicting research on who experiences it the most, and how much research results depend on the method used to gather them.
A recent NWEA analysis of MAP Growth results offers a workable finding for families. Average math scores fell by roughly two to seven RIT points over summer, depending on grade. Those declines equal about 10 to 30 percent of what students typically gain in a school year. Average reading scores changed by less than one RIT point.
Those figures are just averages. They don’t describe every single school-age child. Over the course of a summer, some decline, some don’t, and some even improve. But the research proves that math needs more attention over the summer than reading.
A possible reason for this is that reading is something that happens passively throughout the day, but math needs to be deliberately practiced. Nobody, especially not a child, is going to do math equations in their free time without an external reason to. As a result, the procedural skills and multistep processes required to solve those equations decline when they’re not practiced. That’s why study skills built around math and problem-solving benefit from deliberate, if brief, practice.
Reading and Math Need Different Summer Plans
If your child needs to practice reading, keep it loose and interest-driven. Renaissance recommends at least 20 minutes a day as part of a consistent reading routine. Assigning a novel to read is overkill. Comic books, magazines, graphic novels, sports articles, or an audiobook followed along in print all count.
A simple way to squeeze more out of your child’s reading practice is asking them a single, simple question about what they read. For example, if anything surprised them or what they think will happen next. You’re not quizzing or testing them, that’s what we’re trying to avoid. You just need to get your child to explain an idea.
Math usually needs a more deliberate prompt. Ten or fifteen focused minutes might cover multiplication facts, mental math, or a short set of fraction problems. None of this has to come from a workbook. Children can:
- Count change at a store, or compare prices and discounts
- Split a restaurant bill, or double a recipe
- Estimate travel time, or measure a room
- Keep score during a game, or work out an average from sports stats
Just make sure your child’s doing the math instead of watching an adult do it.
Summer is not the time to race through an entire future curriculum without support. The goal is maintaining last year’s skills, so September doesn’t get eaten up by relearning them.
A Routine That Still Feels Like Summer
There’s no need for an elaborate schedule, just consistency. Pick a predictable time, like right after breakfast, the drive to summer camp, or a train ride.
It’s easier to repeat many short sessions than a few long ones. Fifteen focused minutes followed by the pool works better than an hour-long block everyone starts to resent. Pairing practice with an existing routine cuts down on negotiation too. A child might read during a sibling’s practice. Another might do a short math activity before screen time, or run through flashcards while waiting to leave the house.
Always track your child’s progress, but keep that simple, too. A paper calendar, a notebook, or a row of checkmarks on the fridge is enough. The record should make the habit visible without turning a missed day into a failure.
Vacations, sleepovers, camps, and busy weeks will interrupt the routine. Pick it back up afterward instead of trying to repay every missed session.
Ask the Teacher Where to Focus
Before school ends, ask the classroom teacher which one or two skills deserve the most attention. “Practice fourth-grade math” is too vague, and fourth-grade math looks very different now from when you learned it. “Keep working on multiplication facts and equivalent fractions” gives you something concrete.
Reading works the same way. One child may need fluency practice. Another may need help explaining what a passage means. A third may just need to read often enough that the habit sticks. Ten minutes aimed at a known weak spot usually beats an hour spent reviewing an entire grade-level workbook.
Making Practice Easier to Accept
Kids will resist anything that even smells of school during summer, but how you present the practices can change how they respond. “Morning math” sounds lighter than “summer school.” Picking a book at the library feels different from getting handed an assigned reading list. Cooking dinner gives fractions a more natural home than a page of disconnected problems.
Giving your child agency is a big help here, as well. Let them pick what book to read or when to practice math. Small rewards can help a reluctant kid get started. Pool time after the short session works. So does picking the evening movie, or an extra privilege for sticking with the routine a few days running.
None of this needs to be perfect. Perfection is the enemy of progress. You only need to maintain the habits on ordinary days.
When a Home Routine Isn’t Enough for Summer Learning Loss
A light routine works best for a child who finished the year close to grade level. That kid mainly needs to keep familiar skills active. More support may make sense when a child:
- Ended the year clearly behind, or keeps using an incorrect method
- Has a large, identified skill gap, or is heading into a much harder course in the fall
- Can’t begin or finish practice without constant adult prompting
- Has gotten a specific recommendation from a teacher or school team
Practicing the wrong method for ten weeks can make it harder to unlearn later. In that case, direct instruction does more good than piling on extra problems.
The Institute of Education Sciences advises summer programs to align learning with real academic needs and adapt instruction to students. Regular attendance and strong educators do more to combat summer learning loss than extra practice alone. A program is worth judging by what happens during the time, not just how many weeks it runs.
Kids preparing for Algebra, harder coursework, or a new language may need a targeted preview rather than general upkeep. You want to ease the initial shock of the first unit, not finish the course before school even starts.
When Starting the Work Is the Main Problem
Some kids know the material fine but struggle to begin, organize their time, or keep going after a mistake. In those cases, executive function coaching may address something different from subject tutoring. The focus often lands on choosing a starting point and breaking work into smaller steps. It also covers returning to a task after getting interrupted.

There’s no clean rule that older kids always lose more ground. NWEA’s current MAP Growth analysis found the biggest average math declines in elementary grades. Results still vary a lot from student to student at every level. The better question is which specific skills a given child is likely to stop using over break.
Is summer school worthwhile when a child is behind?

Track participation without punishing missed days, and bring in real instruction once review alone stops being enough.
Cramming another school year between June and September was never the goal. It’s keeping the important skills close at hand. A kid should still be able to sit down, start, and work through something hard.
